BAE Systems' NAVSOP does positioning without GPS, makes sure the only jammin' going on is yours

Just in case GPS and GLONASS didn't make for enough of an acronym soup, BAE Systems wants to add one more to the navigation broth. NAVSOP ( uses some of the basic concepts we know from cell tower triangulation and WiFi location-finding to lock down a position, but goes much further to geolocate from nearly anything that pushes out a signal, such as nearby radios and TVs. It doesn't even need to know what kind of signal it's looking at, and it can get its position in places there's no GPS to work from, whether it's in an urban canyon or the natural kind.

RallyCross driver shorts jump in X Games practice

RallyCross driver shorts jump in X Games practice

The skill displayed by drivers in the RallyCross competition at X Games, particularly with the jump, makes it easy to forget just how dangerous the sport can be. Everyone was reminded of that earlier today, however, when Finnish driver and X Games rookie Toomas Heikkinen shorted the 50-foot gap, crashing into the steel ramp. Heikkinen's Fiesta eventually landed upside down, and fluids leaking from the car caught fire after he exited the car. While the head-on crash looked devastating, X Games later reported that Heikkinen thankfully only suffered a broken ankle and minor abdominal pain.

Sony Smart Wireless Headset pro hits retail with $150 price in tow

Sony Smart Wireless Headset pro hits retail with $150 price in tow

Don't let the name fool you, Sony's Smart Wireless Headset pro won't clip on your ear. That's because it looks and functions more like a traditional MP3 player, using its powers of Bluetooth 2.0 to communicate with compatible Android devices. The two-tone peripheral comes with a headset, four sets of earbuds, USB cables and a 2GB microSD card pre-installed (expandable up to 32GB) to let you store music. If the feature set stopped right there, this accessory would be just another underwhelming PMP, but factor in its text-to-speech functionality and you get a PDA of sorts to keep you abreast of incoming emails, texts and social media updates.

Apple lands preliminary ban against Samsung Galaxy Nexus in the US

It hasn't been Samsung's best week. Just days after Judge Lucy Koh granted a preliminary ban on sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, she's following it up with a similar granted request on the Galaxy Nexus. Judge Koh had already signaled that she thought Apple's lawsuit over four patents might have merit, but it's only now that she's deciding the potential damage is worth halting sales until there's a final trial verdict.

Just when you're numbing to robot, zombie and nuclear apocalypse scenarios, some old-fashioned asteroid paranoia pops up to surprise you. The B612 Foundation, which gets funding from, well, anyone, has just announced plans to launch Sentinel, a space telescope which will wander the vacuum cataloging asteroids in our inner solar system. Their goal is to track asteroid orbits and predict large impacts up to 100 years in advance, giving us plenty of time to find a solution (or enjoy our final days).

Gigabyte launches Aivia Xenon dual-mode touchpad mouse

When our eyes first landed upon the device from Gigabyte you see above, it took them a few seconds to work out exactly what they were looking at. There's a reason for that, though, as the Aivia Xenon - as it is known - lives a double life. By day, it's an ordinary PC mouse, with support for multi-touch gestures. By night (well, and day too, if you choose) it's a portable touchpad. The hybrid device offers 1000DPI resolution, can be used up to 10 meters away (for presentations etc.) and comes with software that lets you create custom gestures.

After proving that a 1080p webcam on USB 3.0 was possible, to the surprise of none, Point Grey's latest addition is a little more impressive, This "ice-cube sized" camera can pipe 4,096 x 2,160 images through that capacious USB 3.0 port, using Sony's new IMX1221 Exmor R sensor. Thanks to its size, the camera is geared toward business-centric applications, including broadcasting and high-resolution optical inspection - which goes some way to explaining the $945 retail price.

Nettops have slipped a bit out of vogue, but Shuttle is keeping the flame alive for those who like their desktops tiny and hushed. The XS35V3 and XS35GTA V3 have moved on to more contemporary Cedar Trail-era, 2.13GHz Atom D2700 processors that keep the power draw to a fanless 27W, even when everything is churning at full bore. That limit might get tested with the GTA variant, which brings in Radeon HD 7410M graphics for a lift to 3D performance, but neither mini desktop will exactly make the power company beg for mercy.

Google Drive for iOS hands-on

Google Drive for iOS hands-on

It's an exciting time when two worlds collide, especially for iOS users that have an affection for Google services. The head honchos in Mountain View took to the stage at Moscone West today and announced two programs were going to be made available in the App Store by the end of day: Chrome and Drive. The latter pushed out first, so we decided to give the free app a closer look. Head below for some screenshots and our impressions of the service.

Google releases Chrome and Drive for iOS

Who said that Google's I/O conference isn't an important event for iOS users. Google just announced that it's adding iOS support to its Drive cloud storage service and Chrome web browser. Google's own cloud storage, which launched back in April, is already available for download at the iTunes store, while Chrome is still on the way, but should arrive later today.
Google Drive is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch running iOS 5 or later and gives users 5 GB of free storage with the option to expand it for a fee.

Google Play hits 600,000 apps, 20 billion total installs

Google during its I/O keynote hit a symbolic milestone: it now has 600,000 apps in the Google Play Store. As well, the store is clearly hitting a brisk pace in adoption, with 1.5 billion downloads every month and 20 billion since Android began. Free apps are available in 190 countries, with paid apps in 132. The app and download counts stack up fairly well to Apple's own claims, although not universally: it's just short of the App Store's 650,000 apps, but Apple can still point to 30 billion total downloads. Google also hasn't said how many apps are explicitly tablet-friendly versus 225,000 iPad-oriented apps.

Verizon FiOS TV finally set to enforce CableCARD restrictions

Verizon FiOS TV finally set to enforce CableCARD restrictions

Verizon launched its fiber to the home service the same year CableCARD was released, but Verizon's implementation has always been a little different. For starters, Verizon got an extra year before it was required to support it, but even since then, Verizon has been pretty lax about enforcing all the restrictions CableCARD has to offer. Despite years of predictions about the sky falling one day, only now have a few FiOS customers received letters notifying them that the party's over. What we mean is that starting July 31st, you won't be able to just slide an activated CableCARD into another box, like you can now.

Supreme Court refuses to hear Kia appeal

Almost a year to the day after the second-generation Kia Sephia was hit with a $40 million jury award in a faulty seatbelt case, the inexpensive Korean is on the wrong side of another court verdict. This time it has to do with the brakes on the 1997-2000 Sephias, which were accused of wearing out too quickly. An owner in Pennsylvania sued, led to a class-action case against Kia and a Pennsylvania court awarding each of the 9,400 plaintiffs $600 in reimbursement, with the judgment totaling some $5.6 million. After 11 years of the case and appeals, the U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear it, rendering the verdict final.

If you're an active Google+ user and you were wishing that Google would create a Google+ app designed for tablets in mind, you're in luck as Google has announced at Google I/O that Google+ for tablets has been revealed. Claiming to be the best version of Google+ they have ever designed, the app for tablets features more prominent text and pictures, which are apparently “playful” to look at, whatever that means, but we have to admit that it looks pretty good.

What is the Q. Well, it's a ball. a ball that plays music. And videos. And it also lights up. It's what Google is calling it a "social streaming device" but what's most important is that this is finally the realization of the Android@Home standard that was unveiled last year. While the styling is what'll immediately grab you, it's the functionality that Google thinks will rock your living room. Join us after the break for our first impressions of this category-defying device.

The idea is that your friends and family can use their Android devices (because everyone has one, right?) to build up a playlist of music or videos.

Nelson Piquet Jr. – son of (obviously) Piquet Sr., a three-time Formula 1 champion – currently races in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and the Nationwide Series. Piquet and sponsor Alpinestars decided it would be cool to have the racer's Number 30 Chevrolet Silverado painted up by David Gwyther of Death Spray Customs ahead of the Charlotte round of the truck series. The artist came up with a motif he calls "Heat Signature", and the livery was duly printed on vinyl and applied to Piquet's machine.

Cub trapped in garage rescued by mama bear

Your garage should be a sacred place, somewhere that your precious car can hide away from the outside world and its ever-looming threats of bird poop, road salt and bears. Yes, bears should generally not be allowed into your garage, but this homeowner from Lake Tahoe, California apparently didn't get the memo. The video above shows a bear cub, let's call him Baby Bear, playing gymnastics on the track of this homeowner's garage door. The bear's mother, let's call her Mama Bear, hears the cries of her child and uses her prodigious bear power to lift the garage door and coax Baby Bear back to the freedom of the wild.

Bellwether California market sees share growth for Detroit automakers

Ask any sales and marketing executive from Chrysler, Ford or General Motors what their company's greatest challenge is and they will unequivocally reply, "California." The Golden State accounts for 12.5 percent of all new car sales in the United States, but even more importantly, it is seen as a bellwether for the nation. As the home of the entertainment and consumer electronics industries, California has an outsized reach into our nation's popular culture – but Californians have historically been among the least receptive to domestic products.

Who knew Lego characters had to be somewhere in a hurry. Adafruit did, as it just whipped up a minifig-sized train schedule. The invention mates one of Adafruit's own 1-inch OLED boards with an Arduino Uno controlling the schedule behind the scenes. It looks to be a straightforward project for the DIY types, although the display is currently all show: the schedule doesn't (yet) pair up with the train tracks to automatically let your minifigs know if their trip to the pirate spaceship castle has been delayed by ghosts. Judge Koh stops US sales of Galaxy Tab 10.1, puts a smack down on Samsung (updated)

Thought Samsung was out of the woods when it defeated Apple's attempt to prevent it from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 stateside. Well, Apple appealed that decision and was given a second crack at banning Sammy's slate last month - and it looks like Cupertino made the most of the opportunity, as Reuters reports that Judge Koh has granted Cupertino's request to enjoin the sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Details are scarce at the moment, but we do know it's only a preliminary injunction, meaning if Samsung's ultimately victorious in the case, the injunction will lift and it'll be free to peddle its wares once again.
