RIM to stay focused on consumer markets

RIM to stay focused on consumer markets

Contrary to yesterday's reports about RIM giving up on most consumer markets, RIM issued a statement today saying that they are “fully committed to the consumer market.” However instead on focusing on the general consumer market, RIM will be focusing on specific areas of the consumer market where the BlackBerry excels - which means phones that are great for communicating as well as remaining secure enough to satisfy employer's needs for security and data management (isn't that what RIM is already doing now?).

McLaren delivers 25 MP4-12C GT3s to customer racing teams for 2012 racing season [w/videos]

When a McLaren hits the race track, the competition had better watch out. The British outfit is, after all, one of the most successful in Formula One, having won 176 grands prix, a dozen drivers' championships and eight constructors' titles. But McLaren's prowess extends beyond F1. The Woking firm was a force to be reckoned with in Can-Am in the late 60s, and the last time it built an endurance racing sportscar – the famed F1 GTR back in 1995 – it trounced even the advanced prototype racers to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Now, McLaren is back in the sportscar racing game with the new MP4-12C GT3.

Apple settles with iPhone 4 users over Antennagate for $15

Apple's iPhone 4 launch was marred by something the tech press dubbed ‘Antennagate.' The phone's new antenna design meant that holding the phone in a certain (and fairly common) way meant decreased signal and even dropped calls. Apple fixed the issue by offering every iPhone 4 owner a free bumper case that would protect the antenna from human interference. However, not everyone wanted to use a case or bumper with their phone and Apple has finally settled with customers not satisfied with the offer of a free bumper.

But this system makes it very easy to understand which part is being monitored, by putting it in a 3D context.

LG unveils flexible plastic e-paper display, aims for European launch next month

LG has made no secret of its fondness for flexible e-paper, but those dreams became a reality today, with the announcement of a six-inch display that promises to "revolutionize the e-book market." The malleable plastic display sports a resolution of 1024 x 768 and can bend at an angle of up to 40 degrees. At just 0.7 millimeters thick, it's about one-third thinner than similarly-specced glass displays, and weighs in at 14 grams - about half the weight of its glassy competition. Touted to arrive sometime in 2013 according to Asian research group CLSA, word on the street has it that Foxconn, one of the main manufacturing subcontractors for Apple, has decided to throw some money in Sharp Electronics' direction, which might very well pave the way for a true blue Apple TV set instead of remaining as a cute little droid-like device in the corner of your home.

Microsoft Co-founder Paul Allen's Identity Gets Stolen

Microsoft Co-founder Paul Allen's Identity Gets Stolen

Identity theft is not something that we are unfamiliar with. With so much details being shared about themselves all over the internet via sites like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and so many others, more and more people are finding themselves victims of identity theft. However, much like second-hand smoke causing cancer, it's not always the ones who share every aspect of their lives online or even the most tech savvy people who can be kept safe from identity thieves. One such case happened recently when Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen had his identity stolen by an AWOL soldier.

Cute mini-robots compete for championship title

If you thought a robot fighting championship just sounds like the plot for a Hugh Jackman vehicle, you'd be partly right. We'll tell you who does have the real steel though, the plucky fellas you see above. They're competing for this year's ROBO-ONE championship, an annual competition where humanoid robots slug it out to the death (or power failure at least) held this weekend in Kawasaki, Japan. This is no toy fair either, with contestants bagging a $12,000 pot if their android-avatar wins the crown. This year, that title goes to GAROO, winning for the second time in a row by defeating Gargoyle Mini for the spoils.

MeeGo gets a stay of execution? Two new Nokia MeeGo phones reportedly in the works

. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop had several tough decisions to make when he came on board and replaced former chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo. Of course the biggest shift for Elop's Nokia came in mid-February last year when the company confirmed that the burning platform had scorched MeeGo, and Nokia planned to dump its Linux-based mobile operating system for Microsoft's Windows Phone OS. Nokia still went on to launch the N9, and it was widely believed that the handset would be the only MeeGo device from Nokia to ever see the light of day.

PSA: Real LCD HDTV refresh rates are getting harder to find behind marketing fluff

Electronics makers love a spec they can get behind and make the center point of their marketing efforts - no matter how useless it is as a comparison. The undisputed be all arms race HDTV metric for the past few years, LCD refresh rates, has recently become even muddier according to HD Guru. Terms like Clear Motion Rate (Samsung) and Scenes Per Second (Vizio) are meant to confuse the customer while resembling the somewhat useful (and, as of late, unmentioned on the box) refresh rate. Our advice.

Galileo offers a robotic arm for your iOS device

While Apple's front-facing and rear-facing cameras are perfectly capable of making video calls, there's one problem that they, and other manufacturers might not have accounted for, which is that of the other person walking out of view from the camera. For example when attempting to host a video call with a large group of people, not everyone can fit into the frame unless they squash together which can be uncomfortable, and it might be tricky attempting to video call your toddler especially when they can be easily distracted, which is why Motrr has come up with the Galileo.

What if trees could be used as batteries?

What if trees could be used as batteries?

Yes, our bark-skinned friends are nice and beautiful and we shouldn't mess with them too much. But here's the thing: we already chop them down for paper, so why not use their spare woody meat for batteries too. Like previous attempts at organic energy storage, it all hinges on mimicking photosynthesis. Up to the a third of the biomass of a tree is a pulpy substance called lignin, which is a by-product from paper production and which contains electro-chemically active molecules called quinones.
