How tiny recalls are becoming the new norm

How tiny recalls are becoming the new norm

Due to the nature of mass production, a faulty part on a car can cause a recall numbering in the tens to hundreds of thousands of vehicles, even if not all of the cars in the recall are defective and need a fix. "Better safe than sorry" is the mantra. But over the past few years, automakers have learned how to perform recalls much more efficiently by employing technology that allows them to trace parts back to their sources, Automotive News reports.

Motorola Camera App Released, Only Compatible With Moto X

Motorola Camera App Released, Only Compatible With Moto X

Taking a page out of its parent company Google's playbook, Motorola has released one of its smartphone's core applications on the Google Play Store. The Motorola Camera app has now been released, and is readily available for download. There's a caveat though, the app is only compatible with Moto X right now and it doesn't seem like compatibility will be expanded to include other Android devices as well, quite unlike Google which doesn't limit core apps to a specific device. Though its possible that Motorola might make the app available for its DROID lineup somewhere down the line.

New iPad Mini Shortages Could Be Attributed To Sharp's Low Yield Of Displays [Rumor]

Apple's iPad mini with Retina display was announced recently but interestingly enough unlike the iPad Air which was put up for pre-order with a release pegged for the 1st if November, the new iPad mini was not given the same treatment, although it was scheduled for a release later in November. A recent statement made by Tim Cook has also suggested that there might not be enough units to meet the demand, indicating that would-be iPad mini customers would be in for a wait. Now thanks to a report from DigiTimes, it has been suggested that one of the reasons behind the possible delay is due to Sharp's low yield of the displays for the iPad mini.

Dual-SIM HTC One Max crops up in Vietnam

Before the HTC One Max was officially unveiled, there were a few leaks showing a dual-SIM version. It showed up in Vietnam, although it was supposedly a unit headed for the Chinese market. It cost 21.6 million dong ($1,015), up from 17.9 million dong ($840) for the single-SIM version. The specifications look exactly the same – 5.9x1080p screen, Snapdragon 600 chipset, 4MP UltraPixel camera without OIS, 16x32GB built-in storage with microSD card slot and 3,300mAh Li-Po sealed battery.

Except, of course, for the second SIM slot that's positioned symmetrically opposite the first SIM slot.

2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid

If you've been keeping up with our long-term 2013 Nissan Pathfinder coverage, you already know that, generally speaking, we dig it. After racking up 21,000 miles (and climbing!) on our dear Sweet Brown, we've become very, very familiar with the Pathfinder package as a whole, and many of us actually prefer it over competitors like the Ford Explorer and Chevrolet Traverse. For 2014, Nissan has added a new hybrid option for its Pathfinder, using an all-new powertrain that will also be shared with the CUV's Infiniti-badged QX60 sibling.

Announced only a few hours ago, an all new version of Snapseed — complete with HDR Scape filter — is now available on the Google Play Store. We talked about it in our previous post, but Snapseed version 1.6 brings powerful photo editing tools made easy peasy for the end-user. The latest of which is HDR Scape, an improved filter for adding near-professional HDR to photos. Normally, a smartphone camera does this by capturing 3 shots of varying exposures, then super imposing them on top of each other for improved dynamic range. HDR Scape makes this easier by producing an HDR experience unrivaled on mobile from a single image.

Holden Commodore ute to die at age 65?

The Holden Commodore ute, an Australia-only automotive icon, could be relegated to the history books in 2016 due to falling sales in the face of increased consumption of pick-up trucks imported from Japan and Thailand, News.com.au reports. Year-to-date, Holden Commodore ute sales have slipped 31 percent. Holden hasn't said officially that the ute will be axed, but it reportedly told News Corp Australia that if the automaker is still manufacturing in 2016 and beyond that it will adopt two global vehicle platforms, neither of which will be made into a ute.

Crazy crash at LeMons race caught on camera

This video from the 2013 Halloween Hooptiefest 24 Hours of LeMons race is the kind of scary stuff that keeps us reviewing cars instead of racing them. This driver is puttering about, carrying good speed and, from the brief recording we can see, driving quite well. That is, until another driver, who seemingly comes out of nowhere, attempts to put his front tire where the passenger seat should be. It's a scary crash, not just because of the purple-wheeled car coming from the blind side, but for the way the tire very nearly gets into the cabin.

There's nothing wrong with the design of Google Glass, although we guess there are some who might prefer if it looked more "normal", as it if it managed to blend with current eye-wear as opposed to looking like something out of a sci-fi movie. While the next version of Google Glass remains to be seen, Sean Percival decided that instead of waiting for Google to do something about it, he would take it upon himself to redesign Google Glass to look cooler. What he did was that he took apart Google Glass before attaching the key components to a pair of sunglasses, which in his case was a pair of Persols.

A rolling stone might gather no moss, and companies certainly do not want to remain stuck in a single place without making any progress at all in relation to its competitors. Having said that, one of the ways that companies could improve themselves would be by doing plenty of research and development on their own part, or alternatively, purchase companies that already have the kind of expertise which they are looking for. In this case, Yahoo has acquired LookFlow, an image recognition company, in order to ensure that their plan to improve photo discovery on Flickr will be able to kick off on the right note.
