NICHE APP: Release Mako

NICHE APP: Release Mako

It's been a while since we spotted a nice NICHE Android app out there, so how about Release Mako – it lets users “report live releases of shortfin mako sharks from Android mobile devices while still on the water”. It has a nice, happy subtext to it, with fishermen who accidentally catch sharks able to report the release of a live one and the coordinates where it happened. Supporting sustainable fishing through Android. Everyone's happy, especially the sharks.

Good luck correctly sexing a mako shark.

New Motorola Droid HD coming soon to Verizon?

New Motorola Droid HD coming soon to Verizon?

It looks like Motorola is readying the launch of yet another new Android handset, apparently called Motorola Droid HD. Unfortunately, we don't know much about the device, other than its alleged name, and the fact that someone snapped some photos with it and uploaded them on Flickr. The EXIF data shows that the photos were taken in Libertyville, Illinois, where Motorola Mobility's headquarters are. So it's quite likely that a Motorola employee is currently testing the handset.

The HD part of its name could suggest that the new smartphone has a 1280 x 720 pixels display.

Canada: Samsung Galaxy 550 to be sold by SaskTel for $29.99 with three-year contract

Canada: Samsung Galaxy 550 to be sold by SaskTel for $29.99 with three-year contract

SaskTel is in the news for the second time today. This time though it's not related to a superphone such as the Samsung Galaxy S II. Although it's also made by the Korean manufacturer, the Samsung Galaxy 550 (i5500) is far from any high-end ambitions. This device, also known as Galaxy Europa, Galaxy 5, or Corby Smartphone in other parts of the world, will be launched by SaskTel soon.
Unfortunately we don't yet know exactly when that will be, but the carrier already has a page up for the handset so that means that the release date isn't far away at all.

SaskTel does, however, already provide full pricing information for the Galaxy 550.

Mivizu Sleek Leather Case in Black Stone for iPhone 4 Review

Mivizu Sleek Leather Case in Black Stone for iPhone 4 Review

I'm reviewing an iPhone 4 case from Mivizu called the Sleek Leather Case in Black Stone. It is part of a collection of cases from Mivizu with 11 different finishes, including carbon fiber, that center on a flip cover case design. I spent a week with this as my only case to get a proper feel for using this as someone's primary iPhone cover, and came away impressed but with a couple slight problems. Read on for my review of the Sleek Leather Case in Black Stone.

Review: 2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon

Review: 2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon

Station wagons are a bit like free dinners. Your parents appreciate them, auto journalists love them and nobody buys them. It's that last trait that's led to the near extinction of the family wagon, save for a few luxury rigs, a . The Acura TSX Sport Wagon may be brand-new to the U.S., but under its newly shaped sheetmetal is the same. That's a lot of kit for $3,650, but the plethora of tech options won't entice the luxury car buyer if the exterior doesn't look great. It helps that the TSX wears Acura's corporate beak more convincing than most of its its larger, more expensive siblings.

Google activates 500,000 Androids per day now, on the way to 200+ million this year

Google activates 500,000 Androids per day now, on the way to 200+ million this year

Andy Rubin is Google's ‘chief Android guy'. He has a Twitter account which he seems to only use from time to time to let people know of some major new milestone regarding Android sales. Bragging, basically. That's just fine with us, and today he's done it again.
Google may have activated 100 million Android-powered devices since the operating system was first released and until May 10 of this year (the figure was announced during Google's annual developer conference), but it certainly looks set to sell a lot more than that this year.

That's since Andy Rubin has announced that Google is now activating 500,000 Android devices each day.

Monster Launches ClarityHD Model One Loudspeakers

Monster Launches ClarityHD Model One Loudspeakers

Typically when it comes to Monster's products, we usually associate it with headphones and in-ear headphones, which was popularized in no small part by the Beats by Dr Dre series of headphones. Well now it looks like Monster is looking to gain the same amount of popularity (or notoriety) in the loudspeaker market with the introduction of their ClarityHD Model One loudspeakers.

Nokia releases lots of N9 camera samples, look good

We bet many of you are curious what the MeeGo-based Nokia N9 camera is capable of. Well, you can stop searching for leaked camera samples right now, Nokia has just released untouched official ones. Two days ago when Damian Dinning discussed the N9 camera sensor and today we finally get to see what it's really capable of. So no more talking, here go the photos.

As it turns out the N9 camera produces really nice shots with lots of resolved detail and nice lively colors. The effects of the large aperture (f/2.2) lens are easy to spot in the shallow depth of field.

Burg 5 watch gives you a phone on your wrist

Burg 5 watch gives you a phone on your wrist

In today's world where we have wireless Bluetooth headsets, there really isn't a need for wrist watch phones that were made popular in movies and comics of the past. But the novelty of speaking into a watch never seems to fade, and companies are constantly cashing in on the trend. Latest to join the party is the Burg 5 Watch. All you have to do is plug a SIM card into the watch and you can make and receive calls with the phone. The numbers on the face of the watch are cleverly disguised as buttons along with buttons to pick up and dismiss calls. The phone's battery lasts for about 60 minutes and has a built in speaker and microphone.

AT&T HTC ChaCha spotted in the wild

AT&T HTC ChaCha spotted in the wild

Remember the HTC Status, or better known as the HTC ChaCha, which will arrive over at AT&T. This is the first of what could possibly be a bunch of “Facebook phones” – handsets that feature a dedicated Facebook button. What you see here is not an official image but a leak, where you will find the famous “F” button (implying Facebook, of course), letting you post onto your own wall or others in a jiffy with but a single button press. Bear in mind that this will be a mid-range handset, so do not expect all the bells and whistles of a high end model to come along with it.

Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Well, maybe not quite, but the 2012 BMW 1 Series M Coupe is definitely fast and powerful. And now it's been spotted atop one particularly tall building.

The building in question, the U.S. Bank Tower in Los Angeles, stands 1,018 feet tall, making it the tallest building in California and the tenth tallest in the United States.

Apple throws a wrench in Jailbreaking for iOS 5

Apple throws a wrench in Jailbreaking for iOS 5

While iOS 5 may bring about MANY welcome changes to the Apple handheld experience, it looks like Apple may have just rained a monsoon on the jailbreaking community's parade. With the new iteration of iOS, Apple have axed the ability to save SHSH blobs, which is what allows users to downgrade to previous iOS firmware through iTunes.  Heck, even the iPad 2 doesn't have an untethered jailbreak at this moment. What this means is that if you are looking to downgrading your OS, you'll be limited to pre iOS5 firmware. This is not just a problem for potential jailbreakers.

Orange Monte Carlo listed by Orange – the 4.3″ ZTE Skate

The long-awaited follow-up to the superb Orange San Francisco Android phone has been listed by UK network Orange, which will be selling the phone internationally known as the ZTE Skate under the name Orange Monte Carlo in the UK. As we've previously discovered, ZTE is hoping to launch the phone for around £180 on an unsubsidised basis, which, if Orange agrees, is a heck of a bargain for a 4.3″ phone running Android 2.3. The high life indeed! Expert opinion is that the processor inside the Skate/Monte Carlo is a bit “entry level” though.

BEST DEALS: Acer liquid E for £124.99, today only

UK-based online deals portal iBOOD is featuring something from the Android portfolio today, offering the Acer Liquid E for £124.99. For a phone with a 3.5″ capacitive screen running at 480×800 resolution and Android 2.2 onboard, that can't be bad. It's powered by a 768MHz Qualcomm QSD8250 processor, which is pretty widely used and capable. So ought to work well, even with Acer's weird user interface customisations on top.
