FreedomPop's pay-as-you-go data service launches in beta, offering 500MB of free WiMAX per month

FreedomPop's pay-as-you-go data service launches in beta, offering 500MB of free WiMAX per month

It was almost a year ago that we first heard about FreedomPop, a startup built on the manifesto that every American (yes, you) should have access to free wireless broadband. Ten months later, the pay-as-you-go service is launching in beta, with "free" meaning 500MB of data per month. For the time being, the touted 4G service will come courtesy of Clearwire's WiMAX network, but FreedomPop says it will switch to Sprint's LTE spectrum sometime in early 2013. In the meantime, though, you can expect speeds anywhere between 4 and 10 Mbps down, and 1 to 2 Mbps up.

ZTE Engage cleared to land at Cricket on October 2nd for $250

We recently caught first sight of the ZTE Engage at a press event in New York, but while Cricket was more than happy to let us play with its latest smartphone, the carrier stopped short of providing us with its pricing or arrival date. All of that changed this afternoon, as we now know that the ZTE Engage will become available on October 2nd with a no-contract price of $250. As a quick refresher, the handset will feature a near-stock Android 4.0 environment and a Snapdragon S2 SoC with a CPU that's clocked at 1.4GHz.

Nokia Releases Asha 308, Asha 309 Handsets in Emerging Markets

“If you can't beat ‘em, join ‘em.” That's what the saying goes. But in the case of Nokia surviving in the tough mobile phone market, it sounds like, “If you can't beat them, find another niche.” With Nokia taking a beating trying to compete against the like of the iPhone and Samsung in the tough smartphone market, it has actually done well in trying to continue making its presence felt in emerging markets where the high end smartphones are not that popular. This is where Nokia is introducing its new addition to its Asha line of phones, the Asha 308 and the Asha 309.

BlackBerry's new Dev Alpha B handset runs BB10, we go hands-on

BlackBerry's Dev Alpha handset proved to be quite the popular item when it was revealed earlier this year. It was so popular, in fact, that the company ran through the 5,000 it constructed in short order. So, it had to build a whole new batch of developer handsets to meet the demand, and thus was the Dev Alpha B born. We got our mitts on this new bit of kit and had a chance to see how it handled RIM's latest incarnation of BB10, so join us after the break for our impressions.

iPhone 5 hands-on!

iPhone 5 hands-on!

At long last, the iPhone 5. We just got our hands on Apple's latest smartphone following its unveiling in San Francisco, and suffice it to say, it's a beautiful thing. Some might say we've been waiting for this moment since October 4th of last year, but another crowd may say that the real next-gen iPhone has been on the burner for much longer. Indeed, this is the first iPhone since June of 2010 to showcase an entirely new design, but it's obvious that Apple's not going to deviate far when it comes to aesthetics.

Boxee's Early Access program is looking for a few good testers, dangles Cloudee preview

While Boxee's oddly shaped set-top box is still its main claim to fame, it's been testing a cloud-based video hosting / sharing service for several months in closed beta. We got a peek at Cloudee, which could evolve into additional features for the Boxee Box some day, back then but you could get your own peek as Boxee is recruiting new (US-based only, for now) blood for its Early Access program.

Blue Oval Goes All-In On The Family Sedan War With Style and Variety. An Aston Martin Rapide followed us in traffic for nearly 20 minutes immediately after we climbed out of the all-new 2013 Ford Fusion. With the attractive styling of America's latest four-door sedan still very fresh in our mind, we couldn't help but stare as the exotic sedan's distinctive snout filled our rearview mirror. The resemblance was uncanny.

It is no coincidence that Ford's new mid-size sedan shares many styling cues with arguably the world's best-looking four-door sedan – styling motivates sales.

Libratone Zipp is the first and only AirPlay speaker that doesn't need a Wi-Fi network

Libratone Zipp is the first and only AirPlay speaker that doesn't need a Wi-Fi network

. Apple's (AAPL) wireless AirPlay technology beats Bluetooth for two reasons. First, it can stream audio in uncompressed CD-quality. And second, unlike Bluetooth speakers that only work within 30 feet of a paired device, AirPlay speakers work over Wi-Fi, so distance is not a problem. But what happens when a Wi-Fi network is not available? Libratone's 10.2-inch tall and 4.8-inch wide (diameter) battery-powered Zipp AirPlay speaker is here to solve the problem. Instead of using a router-based Wi-Fi network, it connects to any iOS device, Mac or PC by creating a direct Wi-Fi network using Libratone's PlayDirect technology.

Honda confirms Civic Wagon for Europe

Honda confirms Civic Wagon for Europe

Honda CEO Takanobu Ito already confirmed that the Civic Type R will be making a return in 2015, and today at the Paris Motor Show, Honda's European president, Manabu Nishimae, announced another new Civic variant is being added into the mix with a new wagon-style model. Throughout the press release, Honda puts quotation marks over the word wagon, but based on the design sketch, it will indeed have more of a station wagon look to it compared to the current Euro-spec Civic hatchback. Just going off what we can see in Honda's teaser image, the biggest change appears to be the longer, flatter roofline and the more upright D-pillar.

Popular mobile game Temple Run to be converted into a board game

Popular mobile game Temple Run to be converted into a board game

If you own an iOS or Android device, then chances are you've either played or heard of the popular free running game, Temple Run by Imangi. For those unfamiliar, it's a game where players try to collect as many coins as they can while avoiding obstacles and while trying to run as far as they can. It's a strangely addictive game and is certainly a great way to pass the time while waiting for class to start or waiting for friends on while commuting to your destination. Interestingly it seems that Imangi has teamed up with Spin Master Games and announced that a Temple Run board game will be making its way into stores come 1st of October.

2013 Citroën C3 Picasso exemplifies utility, cubist charm

2013 Citroën C3 Picasso exemplifies utility, cubist charm

We Americans are far too self-conscious to widely adopt the immensely utilitarian MPV, opting for bloated, high-riding crossovers. In Europe, on the other hand, vehicles like the Citroen C3 Picasso are optimal for families in towns where the streets were once farm paths. This funky people-mover was first unveiled in 2007 and has gone on to move more than 320,000 units in sales. Citroën brought very little to the table in the way of specs, but from what we can tell, the visual updates are on the subtle side, bringing it more in line with the rest of the French automaker's product offerings.
