iPad 3 and iPhone 5 to have IGZO panels from Sharp?

iPad 3 and iPhone 5 to have IGZO panels from Sharp?

Apple's latest mobile devices, the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2, both use IPS displays, because the company considered that IPS was the best technology for them. But things may change next year. According to DigiTimes and unnamed sources in Apple's supply chain, the Cupertino giant intends to use IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) panels for its next generation mobile devices, starting with the new iPad - most likely called iPad 3.
The IGZO panels should be made for Apple by Sharp.

Nokia Lumia 900 (Ace) renders leaked with AT&T branding

It was only yesterday when we found out that the oft-rumored Nokia Ace would be announced by AT&T during CES in January, and would be in stores in March. This supposed Windows Phone-powered flagship smartphone from the Finnish manufacturer has now been spotted in some leaked renders. They come courtesy of one of Microsoft's partners, who sent out some Christmas cards. Nothing special there, but these cards were depicting Nokia's next smartphone.

As you can see, the design is very similar to that of the already available Lumia 800. But it's not identical, so this is clearly a different device. First of all, it has a front-facing camera.

Amazon UK's Transformer Prime Listing Reverts to Sign-up Page

Amazon UK's Transformer Prime Listing Reverts to Sign-up Page

Well it looks like either something is on the fritz over at Amazon UK. One of our readers has just pointed out that Amazon seems to have reverted their Transformer Prime presale page to the sign-up page often shown when a device has first been announced. You also can’t find it in search listings when searching for the device. The only way to get there is via this direct link. Current preorderers may not have anything to worry about as we’re told orders don’t appear to be changed.

We’re not sure if this is just a delay or if Amazon just ran out of presale stock but they usually don’t do this for the latter.

Remote shutter release for camera made from knockoff gaming controller

Sometimes those knockoff peripherals that you buy for your gaming consoles actually turn out to have more use than one, and this is exactly what Duncan Murdock discovered when he decided he wanted a remote shutter release to go along with his brand new Canon DSLR camera he received for Christmas. Digging around his parts drawer, he came across some items that could no longer be used, like a knockoff Nintendo Wii nunchuck as pictured above. As you can see in the photo, the design of the nunchuck isn't too far off from what an actual camera remote shutter release looks like.

Boomboxes might be a thing of the past, but if you love all things retro, you should definitely check out what Matt Keeter has managed to come up with. A student at MIT, it appears that the Fab Boombox was created as one of the final projects for one of his classes, and according to Matt, if you had the time, you could put one together by yourself for under $100. It's made from laser cut 0.208" plywood and features nest octahedral prisms as its choice of speakers. The boombox itself is powered by a 9V battery and appears to have been put together with barely any glue.

At the top of the chart was Apple taking up 29% of the sales throughout this period, but HTC is not far behind with 21%.

Why is it that the simplest, plainest designs always cost the most. Possibly because the resulting elegance comes from lots of hard work. Or maybe it's just that the best products use the best raw materials. Whatever the reason, I must have this beautifully simple wallet, despite its $90 price tag.

Nanoantennas can change phase of light

Nanoantennas can change phase of light

Researchers at Purdue University found that arrays of plasmonic nanoantennas can be used to manipulate the phase, a wave shape, of light as it propagates. The scientists now believe that they have found a path that could enable more powerful microscopes, telecommunications and computers. Specifically, the discovery is expected to have effects on technologies for “steering and shaping laser beams for military and communications applications, nanocircuits for computers that use light to process information, and new types of powerful lenses for microscopes.”.

There's a lot of smoke going on over at Lotus, but we still have a while to wait before we get the first evidence of fire: the new Lotus Espirit and it's in-house V8 won't be here until 2013. On the other side of the world, there's a fair bit of smoke and fire happening at Malaysian automaker Proton, which owns Lotus. The Malaysian government controls Proton and has been investigating a partnership for or sale of the company for a couple of years, but despite its efforts, it hasn't made any deals.

Android and iOS share the same Christmas present: seven million total device activations

Google's SVP of Mobile just provided us with another glimpse inside the horse's mouth, claiming that Android scored 3.7 million new device activations over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. To put that in context, Flurry reported that total Android and iOS activations on Christmas Day alone totaled 6.8 million. If we can accept a very high margin of error, and if we assume that the vast majority of Rubin's activations were on the 25th, we might extrapolate a roughly even split between the two rival platforms.

A lawyer for M-Edge told The Wall Street Journal that Amazon punished the case maker over its refusal to play ball, after threats of burying the company's products on its site.

Google Dev: We are making Chrome out of kindness to web

The obvious idea behind this move is Google's interest in capturing those advertising revenues generated by Mozilla's 25 percent browser market share and users who are using the box for Google searches. Some rumors suggest that the price for Firefox went up as Microsoft was bidding for the space as well and Google certainly has no interest to handing those search revenues to Bing. The problem, of course, is Firefox is a rival for Chrome is this respect as it is cheaper for Google to harvest search revenues through Chrome than pay Mozilla.

Invisibility cloak for sound

Invisibility cloak for sound

The idea of an invisibility cloak has long fascinated the human mind, and so far, these have only appeared in fantasy and science fiction settings. So far, all the experiments concerning such “invisibility cloaks” play around on the same concept – to curve light that comes from behind an object around it, where said light will continue making its way to the viewer. This means the person will be able to see what is behind the object instead of the object itself. How about applying a similar principle to sound waves.
